What to expect

A willingness to listen and try is the only basic need. There is no limitation
as to size, strength, previous experience or age. As to attire, all that
is required is a loose fitting outfit (sweats) with long pants (no shorts
please).
If you already have a martial arts uniform feel free to wear it. Uniforms (keiko
gi) are available for a fee, through the dojo, should you desire to purchase
one.
We ask that no jewelry be worn for the protection of yourself and others.
After
bowing in, class normally begins with a brief warm-up including some
stretching exercises. The class will then break up into pairs and various
Aikido techniques
are practiced as demonstrated by the sensei (instructor or teacher).
It is important that the students watch sensei carefully in order to
protect
themselves and their partners.
Contrary to the beliefs of many martial
arts, Aikido is practiced without winners or losers. The attacker (uke)
and the defender (nage) alternately switch roles and each uses the experience
for mutual benefit.
Because uke allows nage to perform the technique, it
is only proper that nage does not take advantage; and, similarly, since
uke knows what technique nage is to perform, it is impolite to resist
beyond reason. It is
as important for uke to take and improve his or her fall (ukemi) as it
is for nage to practice and properly execute the technique.
The Dojo (practice
area) is matted and care is taken to keep the area clean and presentable
for class. Proper hygiene and a safe training environment are promoted.
True self defense means taking care and being responsible for oneself
as well as another.
Aikido training promotes overall conditioning, balance, coordination,
timing and self-confidence. As the student progresses, the techniques
become more subtle and challenging to keep practice stimulating. Remember,
the
goal of Aikido practice is not to conquer another, but to conquer and
subdue that which is unhealthy in ourselves.
Aikido Nippon Kan is meditation in motion, stimulating for both mind
and body
as well as fun.
